DEAR STARVING WRITER:

Despite not caring for the character of Ka-Zar, and hating every
minute of that Savage Land triology in _Sensational Spider-Man_ I
decided to pick up the series on the basis of positive buzz about this
book. I'm glad I did.

NO -- MARK WAID DID NOT WRITE SENSATIONAL SPIDERMAN

Almost any of the great writers in comics worked on either Cap or the Avengers at one time or another; it is not license to start a general writers discussion.

Talking about Waid (the Once and Future Writer), or PAD (who is doing the Heroes Return reconciliation of the two universes) or Kurt Busiek (who is taking over the post-HR Avengers) is close enough. Discussing past writers in the context of their work on CA or Avengers is close enough. But a general discussion of comic writers in general is off-topic, and more appropriate for other venues.

USAgent History - The Short Version
===================================

USAgent was originally the Cap semi-villian named the Super-Patriot; he was selected by the US Government to become Captain America following the resignation of Steve Rogers (the US Govt. told him that THEY owned the rights to Cap, and that if he was to continue it would be under their control - he resigned instead, and became The Captain).

He was Captain America for awhile, putting up with the resentment from the hero community who were not pleased that Steve was being replaced. Ultimately, villians discovered his ID and killed his parents. He went violent-nuts, and was brought in by the Captain.

The US Government gave the costume and so forth back to Steve; after rehabilitation USAgent became, well, USAgent, using the costume and shield Steve had used as The Captain (which I REALLY liked, even better than the traditional costume). As part of Force Works he did another costume change, and stopped looking so much like a Cap clone. I lost track of him at that point (having had little interest in Force Works).

I never said Waid wrote that Sensational Spider-Man story. I said I hated that Savage Land triology (who I knew was written by Todd DeZago) but decided to pick up the Ka-Zar series anyway, because of the positive buzz I had heard about it due to Waid's writing and Kubert's pencils. And I'm glad I did.

The Agent changed his name from Johnny Walker to Jack Daniels to keep
a liquor brand name. Tony Stark gave him a new wave costume with
photon shields. Gruenwald had a good plot with the Agent going psycho
trying to replace Cap. He should have killed him in ish #350. He's
another costumed athlete with no purpose now.

I'm pretty new to online communications (chat, bulletin boards, whatever) so I don't have a problem using my real name. I guess it's a bit like the CB craze of the 70's when everyone had a "handle." Just for fun! I, too, enjoyed those early 70's "Let's Rap With Cap" columns, though I never got published in those particular columns.

He also is usually his own editor (Thomas edited Cap back in the 1970s). Thomas was supposed to be the regular writer of Cap after Kirby left (#214), but that never happened. He did write a few Cap stories circa 1990 in Cap annuals. And he also wrote two titles Cap starred in, The Avengers (probably the best run in that title's history, by the way) and The Invaders.

Glad to hear some kudos for Roy the Boy! I've felt he's been underappreciated in recent years. His stuff is wordier than most, but I've always enjoyed the way he would discover (or create) a continuity glitch, then fix it.

Uh, I'm sorry to be the one to tell you this, jamie, but Rob "Stinky" Liefeld really isn't very good.
His plot ideas are unoriginal and embarassingly simple and small-minded.
Matter of fact, he really has not plot ideas - - they're aimless pieces of trash that are like the Energizer Bunny...they keep going and going and going, without any kind of pay-off in sight. I applaud MARVEL Comics for pulling him off the book when they did, as they would've had another 6 months of terrible plots and crappy artwork. The fact that they finally came to their senses and pulled him attests to this...the books were just plain bad, and were selling badly as a result.
His art is terribly bad...with all of his characters having the same expression (that of perpetual constipation), and are as bad if not worse) than his writing.
Sorry to disillusion you if I've done so...but Rob is just badness personified.

The Anti-Liefeld C.C., fighting the good fight against Robslaught!!!

P.S. I must shamefully admit that I DO buy SUPREME, a comic created by Rob Liefeld, but only because it was brought some sense of originality by Alan "Miracleman" Moore...
With this ultra-SUPERMAN rip-off, you'd have to be a Miracleman to do so.

While i completely disagree with everything he said here, I would like to speak up a moment to defend him. Look, everyone, he has the right to like whoever he wants. This is a public forum, and if he wants to state that Rob is great, then he should be allowed to do this without being attacked and derided. While a number of you called him childish or stupid, your own responses were more childish than the inflammatory nature of his original post.
So, if you want to rebut him, just sne din a reasoned argument. Don't simply lob insults around, it's pointless.

Jamie:

I'm not real sure what Waid and Garney did to deserve such an outpouring
of displeasure from you, but evidently it must have been something
hideous! Let me ask you to do the rest of us a favor, read the Waid/
Garney run and tell us specifically where they were bad compared to
Liefeld's run on Cap. Meanwhile, I'll get the only Liefeld comic I
could stomach (Cap#1) and tell you somethings about it that I thought
merit criticism--excuse me a minute!

I'm back, well let's start off with the moving furniture. I don't know
about your house, but where I live the furniture doesn't spontaneously
move itself as it seems to do in a Liefeld comic. Plus, TV's in my
neighborhood need a plug or a cable to show pictures, not so in Liefeld's
universe evidently! It also seems that Liefeld can't decide how tall
Cap is, on which hands he wears gloves (or his shield), whether Steve's
wife actually has feet or not (and how could she stand on those toothpick
legs?), whether or not characters should actually touch the ground on
which they are supposedly sitting or standing, and (last, but not least)
how to use the word "Suddenly" in a comic. That's just issue one! Don't
get me started on green blood, the healing factor of swallowing blood,
the apparent "homage" of the female Bucky to Miller's Batman series,
the "borrowing" of the "Total Recall" story line, and a hundred and one
other goofs (especially his horrid rendition of Fury!). Oh, and one more
thing I didn't like about Liefeld's run, he couldn't decide whether Dum
Dum Dugan was the Pillsbury Doughboy or Arnold Schwarzenegger!

Well, I've done my share, now tell me what was so horrible about Waid
and Garney and there brief run, and please give me details!

Happy Birthday,

Bubba2

Hi Jamie:

Captain America here. I've responded on this board before and even
corresponded a bit with Spider-Man right here on Alvaro's boards (by
the way, thanks Alvaro for setting this up for us!). I read your
statement and feel a little confused. Do you really think that Rob
Liefeld is strong enough to kick my butt? I mean, let's be honest,
I've fought much stronger and (in all honesty) much smarter foes.
I honestly believe that Rob is a nice guy, but I don't think he could
defeat me in a one-on-one fight.

Of course I'm kidding, I realize that you mean that Rob writes and
draws me well. Well, Jamie, I must admit that while Rob was in
charge, I felt like I was living a nightmare. My shield would
mysteriously switch arms in a fight, I'd spout dialogue that sounded
like a bad Jerry Falwell sermon, and my wife turned out to be a
robot! I really don't like the way Rob messed up my life, and, quite
frankly, I'm glad he's gone. I mean, let's face it, I may actually
be drawn consistently in the future and my stories/life may have some
real plots. Plus, we can get back to the Red Skull being dead (he is
a real pain in the neck!). Well, I've got to catch some bad guys, so
I'll sign off for now!

Keep the faith,

Captain America
"Off in a universe he never wanted!"

I like Waid better than Liefield. You and I have a professional
difference of opinion (Is that better Roscoe). I don't think, however,
Liefield deserves as much abuse as the old message board gives him.
He has some talent, alot of ego, and was trying to do thing his way.
Jamie, I don't think you are stupid just opinionated,,standing up

self confessed villian who suffers from the ebola virus. What
do we really know about this man ? Is he really a man? We know that
that he is fascinated with numbers. He may have his own agenda for

I have heard on good authority that there are a great many negative things about the Supreme character. Now, we're not really talking about artwork, or a creative team, or anything like that. I'm talking about an ultra right wing christian character who wanders the universe purging entire planets of their religious beliefs if they don't agree with his one "true" belief. Is this true about Supreme, and if so, I'd be interested in what you find appealing about him.

Alvaro, somebody made the point that they believe Liefeld used his unused plots from Cap for this series. It would be consistant with ihs laziness and lack of creativity. Plaidy hinted that he believes it to be a spoof, but I think that that is giving Liefeld to much credit in the "brains" department. ...Wonder if Marvel could sue him???...hmmmm, that might be fun to hear about.

Stryker....U.S.Agent was originally created to show the government's ineptness at creating a superhero and therir total lack of insght to what really drives Steve Rogers to be Cap. The original story was really good...Agent goes progressively koo koo....so he wasn't meant to be a cheap rip off, but a reminder of how Cap is one of a kind.....Heyyyy, I guess that means that he WAS supposed to be a cheap rip off!!!!

> Thunderstrike

I dunno what yer talking about...I only started buying the book at the beginning of Alan Moore's run (#41, or so) and haven't heard a whimper about him flying through space and destroying planets that diagree with his "true" beliefs.
While this would make for an interesting character, and perhaps some interesting stories...I don't find this appealing in the realistic sense.
It sounds too Nazi-ish (although what the Ratzis did had little to do with religion) or Jimmy Swaggart-like.
I heard on an evangelist show this morning (there was nothing else to watch, and living in dorm room, I get only three channels) this guy saying how there were all these different beliefs about what happens to people after they die - - such as "reincarnation," "purgatory," "nothing" and all the rest...
Then the guy went on to say how all of these were false, in essence saying that Hindusim, Buddhism, Taoism, etc. were all wrong in the bargain...that essentially, Christianity was the only true religion.
This sounds sort of like what you were talking about, in a less extreme sense.
If this was the case in the earlier issues of SUPREME, I'm glad I didn't buy them, as this seems like a rather single-minded and Rob Liefeld-like idea.
The SUPREME I'm buying has Mr. Moore bringing some sense of childhood wonder, and fun and enjoyment back to a comics character - - something too many of the "big" titles have suffered from lack of for too long.

Don't you agree?

LIEFELD / WAID : What I REALLY think........... (370)

Posted by jamie on May 04, 1997 at 20:53:40 PDT

Dear Readers :

I like Rob Liefeld . I think his stories are exciting

and unpredictable . CA #1-5 are my all time favorite

Marvel comics. He has a very original art style and

it is full of detail .

I don't particularly like Ron Garney's art , but I

think it's okay. Mark Waid is an excellent writer ,

but I like Liefeld's more . Waid is my second choice

for CA.

I've got to say , CA#6 was both disappointing in story AND

art. If he was going in that way, I wouldn't want him on CA......

My opinion (Hey this is well thought out, and no bashing in it) Please Read. :-) (371)

Well since Captain America is my all time fav. superhero I have to totaly disagree with you here Jamie. Not only was the art work terriable in Cap. HR 1-6 but the story line sucked the big one.

I believe that Marvel's disscission to take Waid/Garney off of Cap. was the worst disscission since they replaced Pete with Ben. So myself like many Cap. fans wrote letters to Marvel telling them what we thought . And guess what it worked! Cap. #7 was the best of the HR stories and the art work was ok. But no one can draw Cap. like Garney! His style is suited for Cap. Cap. should be drawned simple and down to the point and this is how Garney drew him. So that makes Garney a hell of alot better than Robsuck.

Now for writers hands down Loeb sucked too on Cap. The man has no ideal what Cap. is about and so for that should not be allowed to write a Cap. book. Waid on the other hand grew up reading Cap. and has always been a huge Cap. fan. So that makes him better suited to write Cap. Also Waid's story were alot better then Loeb's whose story just plained sucked. Too me Cap. should be more than some stupid 90's all action and no story comic, it should have a story and should be more about the man himself Steve Rogers. I think Waid does an excellent job writing stories that not only have action but tell us about the person that we are reading about too. If you don't believe me on this one then pick up the last issue of the Flash, this book shows why Waid is such a great writer.

Now for a punch at you Jamie, I have a question for you in my opinion only Rob could like himself as much as you seem to do, so who are you?

Enough Said.

I flipped through the SUPREME/GLADIATOR cross-over.
I thought it was okay, but it didn't (and couldn't) have the same kind of stuff that Alan Moore writes. Cross-overs are, by their very nature, not as good as the comics they are drawn from.
Despite the fact that Keith Giffen is an awesome writer (I loved his LEGION stuff), I love Moore!

This post is all well and good, but you still haven't told specifically what you didn't like about the Waid/Garney run. I listed several specific criticisms of Liefeld (see two posts ago) and I asked for a similar response from you. Please tell me what you don't like and we can talk. Saying "So and so sucks" is just an opinion, I want an opinion with specifics to back it up. I don't think Liefeld sucks, but I didn't care for his Cap (or his Agent America, for that matter). I've told you my reasons, now tell me yours. Thanks!

I don't like Rob's art as I don't think his people look like people. This might be OK if I found it stylistically appealing, which I don't. To be stylistic, I think you need an underlying sense of anatomy, which I don't see in Rob's work.
(Now for the unpopular part of my post)
I had been boycotting the Rob-Cap for personal reasons, but recently got issues 3 and 5 when I bought a "lot" of comics sight unseen.
I read them. I thought parts of the story were OK, but they weren't true to the character as he previously existed.
I think Loeb probably did his best integrating Rob's ideas into something resembling a coherent whole.
But then I saw the Sam-drinking-Cap's-green-blood thing in issue 5 and I decided I had made the right choice in boycotting the issues.
ABOUT Waid/Garney:
The first few issues were not that great. Garney improved as the series went on. I think Waid did too. Look at Garney's recent work on Silver Surfer and I think you'd have to agree he's a lot stronger artist than in issue 444.
Anyway, enough babbling from me in a discussion thread probably doomed to continued repeatings of "you suck," "no, you suck."

Interesting. Liefeld's art is full of "detail"? So why does he frequently not have backgrounds?
Just to be clear, Liefeld doesn't write. He's an artist, and sometimes plots, but he never scripts. So any comparision with him and Mark Wiad is mostly void. You should be comparing Waid and Jeph Loeb.

There is actually a promotional picture done by Liefeld (prior to HR) that, I swear, is the exact thing only with the CAP chartacters. Even the positioning of CAP, LADY BUCKY AND RED/SILVER SKULL are the same.

He is so pathetic.

Sharon Carter's Death and Return (383)

Posted by ATOM on May 06, 1997 at 10:07:05 PDT

When I first heard and read people's negative responses to Waid's decision to bring back Sharon Carter, I didn't really understand all the negativity. I figured it added to the storyline and therefore was good. Well, I just recently read for the first time the issue of Cap (the number of which slips my mind..#234 I think)where he witnesses on video the moment of Sharon's now supposed immolation by burning. Those 4 or 5 panels made me almost want to cry. To see Cap with face in hand brought to tears literally tugged a few heart strings. He looked so defeated. I usually don't get that emotional reading comics, but it touched me at a pretty deep level. So the point is, now I do understand the negativity. Bringing back Sharon Carter has invalidated that tragic, but important moment in Cap history. I didn't fully understand this until I read the original story for myself, but now I understand.

The issue is #237...one of my all-time favorites...
I think it is also implied in that issue...since there is a week between when Cap learns of her death until we see him again as Steve Rogers in Avengers Mansion...I think it is implied that Cap had some sort of nervous breakdown there. It took him a week to simply recover from her death. And, of course, he was still grieving silently when Bernie noticed the photo of Sharon (in #251, I think) and Steve put the photo away.

I read Sharon Carter's death "live" in ish #237. I felt kind of
cheated. None of the writer's seemed to know what to do with her
since Englehart left the series. Kirby kind of ignored her as did
McKenzie. I think they wanted to revamp Cap and they did with Sharon
providing the impetus.
Now remember Sharon had been around since Tales of Suspense days.
Even though she had always been a Cap sychophant. I thought she
deserved a better death. Back then dead characters stayed dead.
I like Waid bringing her back with a little backbone and
sassiness. That last Waid issue with Sharon giving him the salute.
Now that was a Cap moment that will linger.
Of course I'm a big cornball. That's why I like Cap's character.
For that is ze way of honair, the way of BATROC ze Lepair.

If memory serves me, DC has information regarding sending unsolicited items to them on their web site. Sorry, I can't remember the URL for DC right now, but if you search the web for DC comics, you should be able to find it. Marvel may have something similar, look for them at www.marvelonline.com. Good luck!

Well, I checked Marvel, and they have no guidelines or addresses on their web site that could help. Maybe you could check in one of the comics for addresses. DC does have information for submissions on their web site, and their URL is www.dccomics.com. Godd luck again!

New Captain America out today! (392)

Posted by Bubba2 on May 07, 1997 at 10:51:41 PDT

Well, folks, if you haven't made it to your local comic shop, let me tell you that the recent Cap is now available (is it #8? I can't remember). At any rate, I kinda liked it. Robinson handles Cap real well in my opinion, but before I say more, let's add

There, that oughta do it! Cap definitely seems to be back more in his true form than he was in the Liefeld series. He's sporting that neat looking "A" on his head again, and he's taking a motorcycle ride across the US. He stops in at Mexia, TX (just up the road from us here in Waco, where David Koresh didn't live--he was in Elm, TX, almost 15 miles away!), and has a little run in with the Sons of the Serpent (one of my favorite KKK knock-offs). The story is really well written and the art, well, let me just say that Cap is consistently drawn and looks like Cap. I like it! Add to that the fact that for almost a whole issue we have no "Buckette" or green blood guzzling Falcon, and you find yourself in the midst of a pretty damn good story. I highly recommend it! Robinson is a good person to handle this title until Waid gets it. The two of them see and write Cap in similar ways. Check it out!

Happy Birthday,

Hey, y'know, maybe this is the REAL Rob Liefeld.
His writing here sure sounds like the way those CAPTAIN AMERICA comics were written:
BADLY.
Sorry if this is really you, Rob - - but I really DID NOT like your version of Captain America.

Hey, Rob, I'm glad you're off my book! That Robinson fellow sure knows how to write my life better. Hey, by the way, I appreciate the "homage" you are giving me by printing Agent America, but couldn't you have been a little more original? Seriously, some of the things on your preview look just like promotions drawn for my life when you were still here. At any rate, if you are the real Rob Liefeld, do me a favor, tell me which side my birthmark is on. That way, we know whether you are for real or not. Thanks!

Keep the faith,

Captain America

Hey Cap:

Not to burst your balloon or anything, but even if this is the real Rob Liefeld, he would probably draw the birthmark on alternating sides--on the right in one panel, on the left in another. Don't ya think? Kinda like your arm switching shield, huh?

Happy Birthday,

Robinson is a great writer and I'm in heaven this week ! Robinson writes three titles: Cap America, Starman and Cable. This is a great week.

And I really enjoy the covers of Cap by Jim Lee.

...um...too easy....

....but I did notice that the New Mutants made the list and X-Force didn't ...does that mean that you liked the team better up until you ruined the cool direction that Louise Simonson was taking the book...and I've always found it kinda funny that you took the credit for her vision...the minute that your name was under the position of "writer" the book fell apart....

Seriously, the Jack O Latern appeared in the 390's. I want to say
397 (I may be wrong so please don't say I Suck) He then joined
Skeleton Crew and made appearances for about another year. In the
big showdown the Falcon takes him down and I'm still not sure how
he did it. BATROC

Well, he appeared as a villain in Cap in issues # 396-398, and in issues 406-407, and 410-411. He also made small appearances in the following issues where he may or may not have fought Cap: 405, 408, 412.
