What the heck, ya'll go buy a variant cover gold edition Captain America #1 (volume #4) and be happy. I'll be content that I have all the issues of the longest running series on Cap.
It could be worse, I could be going through what the Thor fans are. No title and the character butchered even worse by Rob L.

Bova,,,that old lying cow!! I always wondered what happened to Bob Frank. He was a regular in Avengers for a while, but then he disappeared. They didn't show his funeral or mentioned that he had died. I also skipped the Vision/SCarlet Witch mini series. Batroc the Leaper!!

Thor could very well take over Journey into Mystery once he returns. The writing could be better than ever and his numbering will be in the 500's still, unlike Cap.

You bet I would! They were all in that Invaders miniseries from a few years ago as well, BTW. If the LL was to reunite, let's add the Blazing Skull and the Original Vision to their ranks.

I think it would be cool if Cap inspired a new LL in the Nineties. They could have some of the old names and new names as well. I think if you wanted to use the old characters, they should be in their WW II period.
Let the old codgers rest in peace.
I've recreated some of these characters in my Marvel RPG (yes, I'm still playing in my mid-twenties). I've revamped a new Patriot (no surprise) and a few other Golden Age names as well. It occurs in a post-Onslaught modern setting.

Chat room and a question (1241)

Posted by Patriot on July 16, 1997 at 08:23:01 PDT

I had a great time in the chat room last night. Thanks to all who participated. Let's do it again soon. Sorry I had to run but I needed to be coherant at work today (yes, there are days I truly don't have to be coherant at work as well).
Now on to the question. Does anyone know where I can get a decent Cap wallpaper for my PC.

A Patriot glad to be talking to Americans again.

Do you mean one you can get on disk? Because if you have a particular image in mind and have a scanner, you can format one yourself. Or maybe someone can e-mail the desired image. I don't know if that was the answer you were looking for.

The message "Speaking of Cap Covers", posted by Rob, has a link to a Cap art gallery site. As another suggestion for wallpaper, how about the cover to the Cap TPB? Other than that, if I come across an image that has the proportions of a monitor, I'll let you know.

>>>As many of you know, Rob, Patriot, TJ, the Leaper, Albert Ching, and someone named Aron the Evil Watcher
invaded the Spidey Chat Room last night at the stroke of midnight EST. The enigmatic Roscoe was a no-show as was our over worked moderator Dave Medinnus.
I thought it went pretty well. Jokes were in good taste. Conversations were relevant. Captain America and the Avengers were discussed in great detail.
Guys, and other noble Cap fans, we need to do it again some time.

My resolution is only at 640. I'd like a Garney or Lim Cap if possible (or whoever is on the front of your ss site 3). A cool pose that I can put on my computer. I've already have some sound bites from the Reb Brown TV show and Cap cartoon to play with desktop messages.

Sure Liefeld butchered a lot of characters in HR, but Thor was mercifully spared. Because the Thor introduced in Avengers #1, ain't the real deal. He's a fake (and one worse then the Spider-Clone) who got his butt handed to him by the real Thor!

To be overtechnical to the point of annoying, the original Cap costume's mask didn't cover his neck. (He also had that funky triangular shield) But the only differences between the classic look costume and HR was the eagle (SHIELD's logo). What I didn't like about HR Cap's look was that his arms were bigger than his head!

Well, it's the chat room belonging to the Avengers Mailing List. I'm not sure if non-list members are supposed to be there (though I don't think it would be a problem with anyone), so I don't want to throw the location around, but details about the chat and the mailing list can be found at the site below. This is a serious mailing list; usually between 50 and 100 messages a day.

There's another difference between the HR Cap costume and the regular Cap costume--in HR, Cap's shield had a mind of its own and would mysteriously switch arms without Cap's help! I don't remember it doing that when Garney drew Cap. Also, Cap himself would shrink or grow from panel to panel. At one time he is about 6 feet tall, the next he looks to be 9 feet tall. I know that's not a costume problem, but it was a different look for those of us who have been reading Cap since the early 70's!

Happy Birthday,

I don't know if I'm touching a sore spot on the board but here goes.
I didn't like Jack Flagg but I have to admit that I liked Free Spirit. I'd like to see more of her. This is not a Male Chauvanistic arguement. I thought Jack was not developed at all and his costume and hair were ridiculous (please Rob, take him out of Marvel and use him in Fighting American). They took time with Free Spirit and developed her origin and her costume was not overly gaudy.
I was playing around with the idea and thought she and Nomad would make an interesting duo if they ever thawed him out. I know that Jack was frozen because Fabian didn't want anyone else writing him but Fabian is with Acclaim now and I think its time to spring Nomad out.

Does Cap's armor chaft him? And don't say he wears something underneath, because in the Byrne/Stern run Baron Blood rips caps armor, revealing bare skin. Does the super-soldier prevent chafting by healing his skin or making it super tough?

I agree without qualification.

I thought that the re-suspension of Jack was one of the larger non-HR crimes of Marvel; he has more potential as an eventual successor to Cap than anyone else in the Marvel Universe, if he comes back from the Dark Side of hero-dom. After all, who has the deeper values; one who believes, or one who believes after having questioned, examined, and fought?

In interviews, Mark Waid has indicated that one of the themes from HR which he intends to explore within CA is Cap coming to the realization that there is a need for heroes; look what happened while the HR heroes were assumed dead? I'd think that finding and speaking with all of his old partners - D-Man, Jack, Sam, Cathy, and Flagg - would make a lot of sense.

You mean the micro-link chainmail or the "Iron Cap" armor?

In general, it wasn't unheard of for the chainmail to be woven with a cloth underlayer for comfort; this might be the case with Cap, and it wouldn't appear as an under-layer per se.

Yep. He killed when there was no alternative when innocents where threatened by Flag-Smasher, and he destroyed Baron Blood without a second thought (although killing a vampire may not be 'killing' per se...your mileage may vary).

He will kill to protect others if there is no other way, but he will also do his utmost to find an alternative.

Will anyone agree with me that they made way too big a deal over the death of the Ultimatum agent. Cap killed in WW II. I saw him do it several times in Invaders. However, as soon as Cap hit the 80's, the writers made him out to be some huge boy scout instead of a soldier. I would not want to see Cap killing without just cause or being as heavy handed as Punisher or others. I liked Waid's interpretation of Cap when he had to kill the Skull and didn't spend an issue in self pity because of it.

On the contrary I thought it was handled very well, and I wish Cap had spent more time ruminating over the death of the Skull. Cap is anti-killing period, which I think is borne out not only in the aforementioned storyline, but especially in Operation Galactic Storm.

Was there more than one Invaders series? I'm thinking about the one in the 70s. Was there on in the 40s?

Batroc The Leaper (1279)

Posted by Tony Stark on July 19, 1997 at 11:39:28 PDT

I'd have to say one of the most interesting/unique villians in comics has to be Batroc the Leaper. I mean, most villians are obsessed with destroying heroes and ruling the world, but not Georges. He's not obsesive or power hungry, he's easy to get along with, and has a very strong sense of honor. It's as if he was a super-hero who decided to go bad, but retained enough goodness not to be an out and out villian. His employees like him, heroes he goes against like him. The guy's just plain likable. You feel you can sit down and drink a few beers without anything happening to you.
ANybody else want to toss their two cents worth in?

No, the closest thing to that was The All-Winners Squad, but that was after the war, around 1946. And I think there were only two All-Winners stories. Also, since Cap was said to have gone into suspended animation before the close of the war in Avengers #4, it was later established that the Cap who was in the All-Winners Squad was not the genuine Cap but one of the replacements (Patriot?). A 1940s All-Winners story was reprinted in Fantasy Masterpieces #10 in the 1960s.

The only Invaders series are the regular series in the 1970s and the mini-series in the early 1990s.

My question is...When did Cap kill in WW2? I don't recall him doing any killing, off-hand...Maybe he killed some of those vile villains he faced in the 1940s, like the Red Skull...

Yes, but Batroc has a big ego, too...He often boasts how great he is and if you went to a bar with him, he would find some sneaky way of getting out of paying the bill.
